Inside Aynaghor: The Forensic Anatomy of DGFI’s Secret Prison
Solitary Deprivation Cell
A reinforced concrete box (approx. 8ft × 6ft) with sound-deadened double iron doors. Illuminated by a 24/7 low-wattage yellow bulb with no external sunlight, causing complete loss of diurnal circadian rhythm.
Hidden within the heavily fortified perimeter of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) headquarters in Dhaka Cantonment stood Aynaghor (The “House of Mirrors”) — an extrajudicial black site where hundreds of dissidents, military officers, and political figures vanished without a trace.
1. Architecture of Sensory Deprivation
Forensic inspections conducted following the fall of the regime in August 2024 revealed that Aynaghor was engineered not merely to hold prisoners, but to break their psychological equilibrium through calibrated sensory deprivation:
- Total Circadian Disruption: Cells were sealed with heavy steel plates and fitted with permanent yellow incandescent bulbs that were never switched off, destroying the brain’s internal sleep-wake cycle.
- Acoustic Masking: Giant industrial exhaust units were positioned at both ends of the cell corridor, generating a continuous 85-decibel wall of white noise that prevented prisoners from hearing exterior voices, birds, or traffic.
- Zero Visual Horizon: Detainees were blindfolded and handcuffed every time they were escorted out of their cells to use the communal latrine or enter the interrogation room.
2. How Survivors Deduced Their Location
Despite complete isolation, survivors used forensic deductive methods to determine where they were being held:
Through tiny high-wall exhaust slats, prisoners tuned their ears to the rhythmic roar of passenger jets taking off and landing at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (DAC). By calculating the engine pitch, frequency, and flight schedules, several detainees correctly estimated that they were being held within 5 to 7 kilometers south-southeast of the airport runway — directly inside the Kachukhet Cantonment zone.
3. The Commission of Inquiry Findings (2024–2026)
The National Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances has verified at least 1,569 disappearances across Bangladesh between 2009 and 2024, with hundreds routed through Aynaghor. Over 287 remain classified as missing and presumed dead.
